Johanna Wokalek Replaces Franka Potente in "Pope Joan"

As female pontiff
The film, based on an international best seller by Donna Cross, has been bogged down by a variety of issues, including legal woes, lawsuits, and cast changes. Actor John Goodman was onboard to star as Pope Sergius but eventually pulled out. He was subsequently slapped with a 3 million dollar breach of contract suit by Constantin. The company maintains that Goodman may eventually rejoin the cast. Potente pulled out, as well, due to production delays. Wokalek, who is a star in Germany, where Constantin Films is based, will replace Potente in the lead role. Wokalek doesn't have a high profile outside of Germany, so this film could either be her breakthrough role or could sink based on lack of star power.
Despite all of the stops and starts, the film is scheduled to begin production in August, with a 2009 release date being eyed. At least conservative religious and historical groups aren't attacking the project. It's got enough problems as is.
