TROJAN SOULFUL REGGAE / VAR (LTD) (RMST) (BOX)

    All Music Guide Review

This installment in the excellent, limited-edition box set series from Trojan Records focuses on reggae artists' interpretations of popular American soul songs; it's interesting to here different versions of such familiar material. Disc one features covers of Motown hits, like "I Can't Get Next to You" and "Just My Imagination," by reggae artists including Ken Boothe, the Gaylads, and many more. The second disc moves onto more funky material, including covers of songs from the Shaft soundtrack, James Brown, and politically conscious numbers like "Stop the War Now" and "Am I Black Enough." Reggae interpretations of smooth soul love songs are saved for the final disc, and include Leroy Sibbles' take on "Break Up to Make Up" and "In the Rain," delivered here by the Chosen Few, who perform a whopping 14 other songs (some with Derrick Harriott) over the course of this fine box. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide
