There are no notes and no particularly obvious sense to the order or selection of songs on this 18-track CD -- everyone from John Lee Hooker ("Dimples") and Van Morrison ("Brown Eyed Girl") to Freddie & the Dreamers ("You Were Made for Me") and Herman's Hermits ("Silhouettes") is represented, with some unusual choices of exclusively British interest (Heinz's "Just Like Eddie," Susan Maughan's "Bobby's Girl") and a late-'60s digression (Humble Pie's "Natural Born Bugie"), and some U.S. classics as well ("Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen, "Every Beat of My Heart" by Gladys Knight, "Twist and Shout" by the Isley Brothers) -- and this reviewer hasn't a clue what Ketty Lester's "Love Letters" is doing here. The choices seem more predicated on what was good and available (i.e., cheap and easily licensed) than any real design to the disc, but that doesn't stop Modrophenia from being very enjoyable, if not exactly anything daringly inventive or enlightening -- the sound is state-of-the-art on everything here, and it's not like there are any bad or even weak songs here, just a few awkward detours out of the early/middle '60s and away from rock music. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
