    All Music Guide Review

Women for Women is a collection of well-known female artists performing in a variety of mainstream pop/rock styles: dance-pop (Amy Grant, Cathy Dennis), adult contemporary (Annie Lennox), smooth soul-pop (Oleta Adams, Aretha Franklin, Vanessa Williams, Taylor Dayne), and a bit of country (Kathy Mattea) and rock (Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Tina Turner). Even though the array of styles has the potential to sound incoherent, the compilation actually plays like a set of slickly produced pop with minor variations in flavor, and many of the songs here were fairly big hits, which makes it somewhat attractive. Overall, the compilation is much less problematic musically than its title, which seems to make the rather stereotypical assumption that what women most want to hear from female recording artists is slick soft rock with generally upbeat, sensitive, romantic themes. But that debate is best left to another forum. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
