This combines two double-discs of Fitzgerald's earliest work in one deluxe package. The first double-disc covers her recordings with the Chick Webb band between 1935 and 1938, when Ella was the star singing attraction with the band. Fitzgerald's interpretations of such warhorses as "Shine" and "Darktown Strutter's Ball" already show a fine hand for timing that would deepen in time. Her breakthrough hit, "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," and its follow-up, "I Found My Yellow Basket," are here, along with nice reads of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," "The Dipsy Doodle," and the very interesting "Wacky Dust." The second disc chronicles Ella taking over the band after Webb's untimely death in 1939 and ends in 1942, having become a major force in jazz vocalizing. The band becomes almost secondary to shining the spotlight on Fitzgerald, but the material stays high-quality throughout. The transfers on all four discs is top-notch, and in them you hear the development of one of the music's greatest singers. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
