1964: 20 Original Chart Hits represents the British Invasion at its full power. Unlike previous years' charts, as compiled in this series, there are almost no American acts represented. Apart from the Beach Boys' "I Get Around" and the Crickets' "La Bamba," it is all U.K. artists. Without the Beatles, Rolling Stones, or Kinks, this collection could never be considered complete, but it does round up most of the bands operating just below the big three. The Hollies ("Just One Look"), Manfred Mann ("Do Wah Diddy Diddy"), Herman's Hermits ("I'm Into Something Good"), Peter & Gordon ("A World Without Love"), and the Animals ("The House of the Rising Sun") are all represented as are bands who had only one or two hits and are less recognizable, like the Nashville Teens ("Tobacco Road") and the Fourmost ("A Little Loving"). The disc also makes room for the fine girl group sounds of Helen Shapiro (a very hot "Fever") and the smooth swing of Matt Monro ("Walk Away").
