Richard "Humpty" Vission is a genuine veteran of the DJ scene, having gotten his start in the nascent DJ culture of early-'80s Los Angeles, where he spun for legendary house parties and established the long-running underground radio mix show Power Tools. Big Floor Funk is a showcase for his virtuoso mixing skills: its 60 minutes are divided into 30 tracks, and some of those are subdivided further, so that elements of no fewer than 43 recordings are included (some of them snippets only 30 seconds long). The grooves are mainly more house than funk, so the variety works well to maintain listener interest -- though listening is of secondary concern here. This music is primarily intended to motivate your booty, and it does so quite effectively. Some of the album's best moments come on Vission's own original material, such as the blissfully funky "Been Along Time," but DJ Craze and Juju also contribute some nice jittery drum'n'bass on "Soulshine" and there is a fun excerpt from New Order's "Blue Monday" (inexplicably titled "Like You Do" and credited to Philippe B.).
