    Back to Bass-ics

    09/03/1984 | Progressive Records

    All Music Guide Review

Bassist Milt Hinton, despite recording countless sessions during seven decades, has only led his own recording dates on a very infrequent basis. For this session, he heads a trio also including pianist Jane Jarvis and drummer Louie Bellson. While Bellson is mostly content to swing quietly in the background, Hinton and Jarvis split the solo space on a variety of standards (including "Undecided," "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho") and three group originals. Hinton's charming personality constantly shines through, and the subtle yet passionate music is consistently delightful. This performance was reissued on a 1989 CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
