Although it is intended as a sampler of various Inside Sounds releases, Going Down South Blues Sampler, Vol. 2 works as a well-selected sequence of contemporary Southern blues, ranging from stripped-down, raggedly funky folk pieces from the delightful Jessie Mae Hemphill ("Chicken and Gravy," "Lord, Help the Poor and Needy") to Doc Tomato's blistering electric assault on "I've Kissed My Last Ass." None of it is by the numbers or run of the mill, and it shows the blues to be alive and well, in spite of claims to the contrary. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
