    09/22/1998 | Yep Roc Records

    All Music Guide Review

This compilation comes from the Chapel Hill indie Yep Roc, and benefits Chatham County, NC's Family Violence and Rape Crisis Service. It features a bevy of local talent, including Squirrel Nut Zippers (a typically raucous live version of "I've Found a New Baby"), Portastatic, and Whiskeytown, whose "Me and My Ticket" is a bittersweet affair. Its acoustic sound is also indicative of Garden Place's overall direction, which ranges from pastoral alternative country to tasteful indie pop. There's also the occasional ringer like the quirky soul music of Hobex. Standouts include Trailer Bride's eerie "From the Rooftop," Ben Folds Five drummer Darren Jesse's "Magic That Holds the Sky Up from the Ground," and Tift Merritt's gorgeous, sunny "Lullaby." ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
