Songs from Spring and Summer
All Music Guide Review
Spring and Summer are the final two installments of Foreman's solo venture after a highly successful first decade leading modern rock wondergroup Switchfoot. Like Fall and Winter before them, they were released several months apart but later packaged together as a 12-track set. The heavy lyrical subjects on the first two seasonal EPs was swapped for more lightweight matter on Spring, which contrasted almost too sharply to make the entire set cohesive. But then again, that may have been the point. Time and time again, the stripped-down sets on Spring and Summer are polar opposites of Foreman's Switchfoot material, as he again varies the instrumentation, the song forms and meters (rhythms), the overall feel, and production (Foreman recorded the EPs in his living room). What emerges is a clear portrait of a man whose quest for ultimate meaning and direction in life is directed to God in imperfect ways. Summer is the most ebullient of the four EPs, and rightfully so as the title would suggest. ~ Jared Johnson, All Music Guide
