    All Music Guide Review

Two-disc set of blues recordings that makes the "essential" in the title a very arguable point indeed, unless you consider Junior Wells doing the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" and Taj Mahal doing "Honky Tonk Women" must-haves for the collection. The rest of the set features notable contributions from Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins, Professor Longhair, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Rogers, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, T-Bone Walker, and Bobby Bland. There are also less essential contributions from Robert Cray, Charles Brown, Johnny Adams, Otis Rush and others that tip the scales in the opposite direction. This isn't a bad collection, necessarily, but there are overall far better collections out there to spend your money on. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
