The soundtrack to The Acid House features the distinctive mix of Britpop, electronica, and oldies that seems required for the film version of an Irvine Welsh novel. The album represents all factions of the current U.K. music scene, from indie acts to electronica to chart mainstays. The Pastels' sunny "Nothing to Be Done," Belle & Sebastian's elegant "Slow Graffiti," and Arab Strap's claustrophobic, menacing "I Still Miss You" are some of the album's indie highlights, while Oasis' "Going Nowhere" and the Verve's "On Your Own" deliver stadium-size ballads. The Chemical Brothers' "Leave Home," Underworld's remix of the song, and Bentley Rhythm Ace's "This Is Carbootecnoodiscotechnobooto" bring big beat excitement, while Dimitri From Paris' charming "Toujours l'Amore" provides a slinky, sophisticated contrast. Beth Orton's "Precious Maybe" and the Nick Cave/Barry Adamson collaboration "Sweetest Embrace" add appropriately moody, atmospheric notes to this collection, which (barring T. Rex's giddy "Hot Love" and Dimitri from Paris) could also moonlight as a "Best of '90s Britain" compilation. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
