Kevin Williamson came perilously close to self-parody with his script for The Faculty, so he followed it up with his directorial debut, Teaching Mrs. Tingle (titled Killing Mrs. Tingle until post-Columbine jitters dictated that a "cleaner" title would be a safer, better bet, even if it made no sense). This time, he stayed with high school but toned down the overt horror. The problem was, he didn't abandon the pop-culture glibness and high-school melodrama that made his work seem stale. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that accompanying soundtrack to Teaching Mrs. Tingle also feels recycled and hackneyed. Sure, it captures many of the prevailing sounds of American pop in the late '90s -- post-grunge rock, teen-pop, mellow singer-songwriters -- but it only occasionally has enough spark or flair to be sporadically entertaining, at best. As such, it's a signifier of the state of mainstream culture at the time, which may be of interest to pop archivists; otherwise, it's just a dull listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
