I Dig Everything: 1966 Pye Singles

    08/10/1999 | Castle Us

    All Music Guide Review

After who knows how many repackages and reissues of the three singles David Bowie cut for Pye in 1966, under the musically sympathetic auspices of producer Tony Hatch, it's once more around the block for "I Dig Everything," "Can't Help Thinking About Me" and "Do Anything You Say"." This time, however, it's the packaging itself that stands out, ensuring a warm reception for the release, as the three original singles are recreated within a boxed set of three individually sleeved discs -- CD and 7-inch vinyl both available. The same six songs were also repackaged on a 10-inch EP, reminiscent of the late 1970s' Don't Be Fooled By The Name disc.

The timing was as exquisite as the package -- Bowie's own affection for these unassuming slices of 60's Britpop was revealed when both the vaguely soul-poppy "I Dig Everything" and the proto-angst moodiness of "Can't Help Thinking About Me" resurfaced as surprise inclusions in Bowie's 1999-2000 live repertoire. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
